ACADEMIC REQUIREMENTS
The Kresge first-year writing seminar, Power and Representation, invites students to participate actively in the creation of new social responsibilities. Class conversation, written essays and commentaries, readings, films, field trips, and workshops help students challenge theory and social practice in meaningful “real-world” ways. The course is an examination of key moments at the middle and end of the 20th century. It focuses on Hiroshima and the dawn of the atomic age, and social movements of the late 1950s, 1960s, and early 1970s, including civil rights, the Vietnam War, the women's movement, and the gay and lesbian movement. The last part of the course deals with the economic downturn of the 1990s.
