ACADEMIC REQUIREMENTS
The Merrill core course, Cultural Identities and
Global Consciousness, focuses on great movements
of nationalism and imperialism in the 20th century, and the persistent underdevelopment of many countries in the world. Readings, writing assignments,
and lectures examine
the Congo, modern urban Chicano society, the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, contemporary American Indian philosophy, and one woman’s view of life and conflict in her native Vietnam.
EDUCATIONAL ENRICHMENT AND EXTRA-CURRICULAR OPPORTUNITIES
- Special courses center on the aspects of the theory and practices that facilitate living in a diverse world, address approaches to activism,
and introduce students to the rapidly evolving global society.
- Students selected for the Freshman Scholars Program enroll in a course each quarter, do service in a nearby school, and take part in special extracurricular
activities.
- Classroom Connection links community experience
to university education by placing students in internships for credit in area schools.
- The Pottery Co-op is run for and by Merrill students. It teaches pottery classes and promotes the understanding of artistic endeavors in our environment.
- The College Programs Office and community
programming assistants plan activities, including cultural performances, movies, arts-and-crafts workshops, live music, guest speakers, dances, art exhibits, and College Nights.
HOUSING AND DINING
- Students are accommodated in two large and two smaller residence halls.
- Apartments are available to some transfer and continuing students.
- A restaurant is located at the college.
