ACADEMIC REQUIREMENTS

The goals of the Oakes core course, Values and Change in a Diverse Society, are to introduce students to university-level work, enhance their oral, reading, writing, and analytical skills, and prepare students to interact constructively with persons, ideas, situations, and challenges novel to their experience.

EDUCATIONAL ENRICHMENT AND EXTRA-CURRICULAR OPPORTUNITIES

  • Oakes College is committed to intellectual, academic, and personal inquiry rooted in the possibility of effecting positive social and political change.
  • The theme residence program provides a place where differences aren’t a barrier but are an invitation to growth and understanding.
  • Each residence hall and apartment block was named by students to honor inspirational figures from the arts, government, politics, literature, and public advocacy.
  • A lively program of dances, cultural celebrations, movies, open-mic events, and athletic competitions is open to all UC Santa Cruz students.
  • The Educational Opportunity Programs (EOP) Learning Center, located in the Student Commons, offers tutoring services in a wide range of subjects to all Oakes students.
  • A peer-developed Guzman Mentor Program helps students focus on academic success.
